Week #11 Egg Drop Challenge

Taking a break from the architecture dream house project we started the egg drop designing process. The challenge was to build an apparatus that will safely carry an egg down thirty feet onto a target. There were many different achievements availiable to earn. I am claiming 26 Acheivement Points!!

Achievement 1: Brainstorming- Create 3 sketches with labels (3pts)

Acheivement 2: Material Prep- Create list of materials and document a plan to ensure the supplies will be here on block day (2 pts)

1. Plastic grocery bag
2. 3 feet of tin foil
3. 5 straws
4. handful of cotton balls
5. String
6. Duct tape
7. 2 Dixie Cups

Plan- the majority of the materials are already in the classroom, so it was very easy to make sure we had all the supplies. The only thing we brought from home were the cotton balls and the grocery bag. I brought the bag by carrying my lunch in it and just threw in the cotton balls.

Achievement 3: Fits in a cigar box- our box is a little smaller than a cigar box (3pts)

Achievment 4: Material Wheight- without the egg our weight was 31 grams (6 pts)

-Your materials weigh less than 500 grams.
-Your materials weigh less than 300 grams.
-Your materials weigh less than 200 grams.
-Your materials weigh less than 150 grams.
-Your materials weigh less than 100 grams.
-Your materials weigh less than 50 grams.

Achievement 5: Drop Accuracy- we got it to drop into the third ring (2 pts)
-You hit the butcher paper!
-You hit inside the third ring!

Achievement 6: Drop Time- our egg left the from the above the rail to the ground in about 3 seconds (3 pts)
-Your solution takes less than 1/2 second to hit the target!
-Your solution takes more than 2 seconds to hit the target!
-Your solution takes more than 3 seconds to hit the target!

Achievement 7: Egg Resilience- YAY!!! our egg failed to break (3 pts)

-Your egg didn't break in any way! (awarded three times)
-Your egg didn't break in any way! (awarded three times)
-Your egg didn't break in any way! (awarded three times)

Achievement 8: Calculation Achievements- we have gotten a physics calculation and are trying to get two more from the math teachers that will be posted later (3 pts)

Achievement 9: Other Achievement- create a new name for one of the existing acheivements (1 pt)

-Change Drop Accuracy to the Egg Splat Bullseye

Second prototype we didn't use because it worked worse than our first, but at least we had to options.

SPRING BREAK

Over the spring break I drove hours a day to visit colleges all over New York. Luckily I had the chance to visit my sister, Taylor, graduating from Cornell. She gave me the chance to come watch and help out on her project for a Information Science major. She and her group members are creating a piano. Thermal sensors trigger piano notes when you hold your hand or something over it. Each note corresponds with a different color on a strip of LED lights along wires. She is showing me how to program it.

Design Pinciples and Elements

Assignment is to find 4 household/common items to study. Then list elements and principles of the object and post with a picture.

Strategies of Grades and Relationships

Three ways to maintain or raise your grades as well as building a stronger student-teacher relationship.

- If you aren't understanding anything ask other students or teacher right away.
- Find effective ways to study for upcoming quizes and tests.
- Do your homework completely and with effort, even if you understand the topic.

I can think of many more and I'm sure everyone can think of one. Remember learning can get you to places you imagined being, but had no hope of achieving that at a point in time.

Dream House Week #11

The days seem  to be going faster every week! Sam and I finished the Minecraft prototype with amazing feedback. Mr. Bucko said it was the best house he had built for him over the last years he had participated and he wouldn't change anything. We will continue the process of prototyping with the CAD software that we started after break. Our powerpoint is still being updated and I can't wait for the final to be ready!
